WHAT IS YOUR IDEAL ROOM ?

On the occasion of the project We Decide How We Reside, we stay a few days in Berlin, and lay down our hat in Hotel Pension ECK, near the Tiergarten.

An establishment situated in a building from the 18th century and who has travelers and tourists as a guests since 1920.
Each of the 8 rooms match the room of the middle-class appartment, that was originally : accross the long flowered corridors, we recognize the parental room, these of the children or now these of the servant, the living room…
Since the next century, it’s like if nothing has change : the wallpaper, the furnitures and the properties are period style, like the old Berlin. Even the service of the breakfast keep his one style.

An unic atmosphere who appeals to us, after all these hotel with rationalized pillow. We found that’s touch us in St Pierre et Rome Hotel in Marseille : a place full of histories with a real living soul and where the idea of welcome isn’t reduce to a 9m2 standardised room and to its ergonomic – effective furnitures, but to feather in the pillow, a furniture who tell us a story, an authentic and personnalised decoration in each room, an adapted and listening service. Here the travel continue.
Helma, who deal with her hotel single handedly and from the bottom of her heart, assure a perfect welcome, individualized and following a chic German tradition.
An hotel who charm since one century, a clientele of atists, writers, musicians and loyal regulars

dscn8685_23383941039_o Helma’s Hotel has also be the place of our first experimentation of installation, imagined during our immersion in hotel St Pierre in Marseille. An installation for hotel rooms, that can travel in a suitcase and adapt to the room which welcomes it. Adjusted on-site for the majority, the ingredients of the stage-design choose the side of intimacy while this spaces of passage are more and more controlled by the strict criterion of comfort, welcome standards and norms of hospitality

With the context of the international worshop, we translate all the elements in German, English and Turkish.

MARSEILLE : Arriving at Hotel Saint-Pierre de Rome

Hôtel Saint Pierre Rome-0393

Starting the new term, we get together for three days of immersion for the project “We Decide How We Reside”. On this occasion, we make a stopover at ” Hotel Saint-Pierre de Rome “, which is situated right in the center of Marseille. Katia, the director gives us “carte blanche”. Many thanks for her warm welcome and her trust !

Touching encounters with Carole, the housekeeper, Thierry the front-desk manager, Sonia the receptionist, Dravo who just joined the crew … Marie and Sonia the chambermaids and Jean-Marie the night watchman. A very welcoming hotel team.

They share their universe with us, their habits, their difficulties, their visions of an ideal hotel, of their job! This quirky hotel has a 100-year-old soul… It’s a labyrinth of a thousand doors, which open on passing fragments of life. We get familiar with this peculiar sort of life where individuals add-up without crossing each-other, and which flows 24hrs a day. This hotel wasn’t ever closed for one single day in the course of a century. As a result, there are plenty stories waiting to be picked from the fabric wallpaper!

From the terrace of the former board room, we see the little streets of Noailles, an old working-class area of town, toys from the hardware shop “Maison Empereur”, seafood stalls at “Chez Toinou”, two landmarks of the district, the top of the new tramway, the roofs around the Opera, the “Canebière”, the most famous street in Marseille, the masts of boats at “Le Vieux Port”… We are here at the crossroad of all of the city-centre’s main areas, split by the “Canebière” in one direction, and the tramway, a street corner, or a new urban rehabilitation site across the way.

We have all the time to visit this hotel from the cellar to the attic, to get lost in its twits and turns and to draw, map-out, write, interview, watch. We play the game, carrying-out some of the crew’s tasks, we explore the relationship between gesture and intimacy, between space and identity.

This is already the end of September, we will let these moments settle, to give us some precious, shiny material that we shall use upon our return in October.

EN : During the workshop, we explored the  thematics around hotel which is full of symbols, codes and dreams. We had a public and free time to show our artistic work. 45 persons in the audience who went to La Cité des Arts de la Rue, the 28th of May to live the special experience evening in Hotel Obscura.

There, the audience was not sitting in a chair like in a theater : the visitors were walking in an hotel and had a short and impromptu moment in small groups to live the experience, without knowing what was a fiction or reality, in order to be aware of all the details in the hotel. In this artistic frame, we played with a non inhabited part of La Cité, a site for the invited artists. What is intimacy and how to appropriate a space to live? How to reveal an architecture ?

In our temporary hotel, we offered a glass to our “customers” to visit rooms where they could experience souvenirs of imaginary visitors of the hotel, and open the door to our selves-experiments between four walls.

EN : In May, we had an international intense workshop about collaborative creation. We had a research laboratory in small groups about tools for collective work with French, Greek, Austrian and Australian artists.

This workshop was co-organised with the GK Collective and La Transplanifère. La Folie Kilometre was glad to share its creation and functioning tools to create together. We had exploration in the city and hotels, research time and collective creation sessions. We were hosted by La Cité des Arts de la Rue in Marseille by the FAI-AR, as part of a training programme.

FR : En mai ont eu lieu quinze jours intensifs autour de la collaboration artistique en collectif. Nous avons formé un groupe éphémère, laboratoire de recherche sur les outils de création à plusieurs, avec des artistes français, grecques, autrichien et australiens.

Marseille : hello !

HOTEL OBSCURA WORKSHOP - LA FOLIE KILOMETRE

EN : Hello ! We are actually working on Hotel Obscura, a creation projet expected for 2016, for which La Folie Kilomètre  joined the projet WE LIVE HOW WE DECIDE. We are going to share our reflexions about city and spaces where we are living in general. We are working about ephemeral habitation : the experimentation about the hotel environment will allow us tu question our collective representations of the travel threw the eyes of the inhabitants, customers and staff. We write stories of live playing with reality and fiction, in order to show that we have the choice to live how we decide !
